Waxing Moon

It’s nearly been two weeks since the new moon and hopefully you’ve been able to show your seeds some love and attention (keeping them well hydrated with plenty of light). Although the tiny little green buds may not have broken the surface yet, the moon has still been doing its bit in helping your plants grow.

Under the waxing moon (where the moon grows bigger in size, until it reaches the full moon), there is even more energy and pull. There is still time to plant your above-ground crops with seeds like tomatoes, peppers, melons etc. It’s also a good moment to add some liquid fertilizer to your seedbeds. I use chopped up banana skins steeped in water for a few days. Just sieve the banana skins and voila!

As before, be sure to check the date of the last frost in your area before putting your seeds/seedlings outside, as a late frost will ‘nip them straight in the bud’.

Another thing to note about lunar gardening is that as much as the phases of the moon affect the soil’s moisture; so, too, does the zodiac sign the moon is currently in. Every few days the moon comes into a new sign and over the stretch of time, people have worked out which signs are more favorable to planting, growing, harvesting and weeding.

As I write this, the moon is in Leo (fire sign) which is usually the best time for harvesting. So, if you’ve been growing other herbs and plants indoors for a while (in those heat lamp lit spaces) you may find there’s something there!

I will be posting more in-depth on the zodiac and lunar gardening, soon.

Happy growing!
